The Outset, a clean vegan skincare line founded by Oscar-winning actress Scarlett Johansson is making noise. In the plethora of celebrity skincare brands in the market, The Outset looks towards minimalistic simplicity and ‘finding freedom in the uncomplicated’.
Consciously Clean Vegan Formulas
The Outset offers clean beauty skincare that is cruelty-free with a leaping bunny certification. The products are clinically tested and free from fragrance, parabens, phthalates, sulfates, gluten, and nut allergens.
The brand also takes pride in rigorously working with formulations to exclude 2,700 ingredients of questionable safety, making it safer for sensitive skin. Moreover, inside every product is a signature formulation of Hyaluroset™ Complex, a botanical alternative to hyaluronic acid sourced from seeds of the Cassia flower which is native to India.
Products from The Outset also feature plenty of other skincare powerhouses like niacinamide, bakuchiol, squalane, and evening primrose oil.
Hero Products From The Outset
The result of Scarlett’s vision for the skincare line is a collection of essentials: a cleanser, serum, moisturizer, night cream, and eye cream. The brand’s emphasis on simple, yet effective everyday essentials is reflective of Johansson’s personal take on skincare.
“There’s so much noise in the space, and I thought there could be an opportunity for reduction,” says Johansson. “I’ve found that great skin starts with the basics, so my skincare ritual has always been simple — a consistent routine of cleansing, prepping, and moisturizing that keeps my skin on track,” Johansson adds.
An Impetus For Something New

Scarlett partnered with entrepreneur and co-founder Kate Foster Lengyel to bring The Outset to life. After being the face of top brands like Dolce & Gabbana and L’Oréal, Scarlett was inspired to build something that represented her own beauty ideals.
It reportedly took her five years to bring her idea to fruition, from formulations to brand identity. Speaking of identity, adding to the minimalist charm of The Outset are shots of models of different genders, races, and ages whose glorious skin is featured closely, pores and all. A refreshing sight in the midst of the ‘glass skin’ trend, as one might agree.
The Outset means a new beginning, which feels more relevant than ever at a time when we are all starting over and pressing the reset button,” Johansson shared on the website. “It took years for us to build a brand that was backed by quality and purpose, and I’m thrilled to finally share The Outset with the world. It’s an exciting beginning for me, as well.”
Sustainability On Our Minds
The Outset’s packaging is made with post-consumer recycled material, all of which is recyclable. The paper used is made in wind-powered, carbon-neutral facilities. Soon, the brand plans to debut their low-waste refill pouches for their daily essentials.
Additionally, the brand is a member of 1% For the Planet. To Scarlett, keeping sustainability in mind is a top priority and the brand is reportedly constantly evaluating its supply chain.
Where To Buy The Outset
The Outset launched on March 1, 2022, and is available for purchase online. It will also be available to shop at Sephora starting in April.
