Vegan Blushes

Blush was out of style for a while but it’s been doing a comeback and we are here for it.

Since blush contains a lot of red and pink pigments, it might be difficult to find vegan blush without the inevitable carmine – a red pigment derived from crushed insects.

Luckily, more and more blushes today are carmine-free. Here are the best vegan blushes for 2024. Find your favorite from vegan liquid blushes to vegan blush sticks.

All vegan makeup below is vegan and cruelty-free, meaning all the products are free of animal-derived ingredients and have not been tested on animals.

What Is A Vegan Blush?

What Is A Vegan Blush

Vegan blush is a blush made without animal-derived ingredients. In addition, vegan blush cannot be tested on animals or use ingredients that have been tested on animals.

These are the main non-vegan ingredients that you may find in blushes:

  • Carmine – Red pigment manufactured from crushed bright red female beetles (Cochineal).
  • Guanine – Shine agents in shimmery blushes made of the skin and scales of fish.
  • Animal glycerin – An emollient derived mostly from beef fat, may be included in liquid or cream blushes. Glycerin can also be plant-based.
  • Beeswax – Waxy substance excreted by honeybees, often used in cream blushes.

Instead of carmine, vegan brands use plant-based colorings such as iron oxides, anthocyanins, and beetroot. Instead of guanine, vegan brands go for mica crystals or synthetic pearls. Instead of non-vegan emollients, vegan brands use jojoba oil, cocoa butter, or other plant oils.

What To Look For In A Vegan Blush?

When choosing the right vegan blush, make sure you know your skin type. If you have sensitive skin, steer clear of potential irritants such as harsh additives, talc, and artificial fragrances.

With oily skin, combination skin, and acne-prone skin, avoid vegan blushes that include lots of nourishing oils – you do not want clogged pores. Powder blush is usually the best option.

If you have dry skin, go for a more hydrating liquid brush or cream blush. Baked blush could dry your skin out even more. Cream and liquid blushes are also better for mature skin.

Also, make sure your vegan blush matches your skin tone. If you have a fair skin tone, go with mellow peach and rose shades. With darker skin, choose deeper red or pink colors.

To make sure the blush is truly vegan, choose products with a clear vegan marking or better yet, a certified vegan label from The Vegan Society, PETA, or Leaping Bunny.

How We Review Vegan Blushes

Here are the things that we take into account in reviewing vegan blushes:

  • Ingredient list – the fewer shardy chemicals and additives, the better
  • Shade range – the more choice of shades for every skin, the better
  • Texture – a good vegan blush is soft and easy to apply
  • Blendability – no cartoon cheeks, the blush needs to blend into the skin
  • Finish – natural, radiant finishes are the best, nothing too glittery
  • Longevity – how often do you need to reapply the blush

Why Trust Us

Vegan Avenue has been reviewing vegan makeup products for over 2 years. We have personally tried out most of these vegan blushes and draw on our own experience when writing a review. We have a good sense of what non-carmine pigments are able to achieve these days.
