A vegan skincare product is simply a skincare product that includes no animal ingredients. A certified vegan skincare product cannot also be tested on animals or contain any ingredients that have been tested on animals.
The most common ingredients that make a skincare product not vegan are beeswax, honey, lanolin from sheep’s wool, and animal-based glycerin. Luckily, all those animal ingredients can be easily replaced with plant-based oils, waxes, and emollients.
To make sure you are buying a vegan skincare product, always look for a vegan marking or a certified vegan label. Since some companies use a limited definition of vegan skincare to only refer to ingredients, some skincare products are seemingly vegan but the company may still use animal testing.
